Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are tobacco products that have been sold in the U.S. for about a decade. They include e-pens, e-pipes, e-hookah, and e-cigars, known collectively as ENDS—electronic nicotine delivery systems. They're also sometimes called JUULs, "vapes" and "vape pens." E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco products among kids—and it's become an epidemic. While much remains to be determined about the lasting health consequences of e-cigarettes, there’s evolving evidence about the health risks of e-cigarettes on the lungs—including irreversible lung damage and lung disease.
Similarly, a 2014 review reported that vaping may trigger gum, mouth, and throat irritation. In particular, a 2015 study examined the effects of flavored e-juices on both human lung cells and lung cells in mice. Here’s what we currently know about the effects of vaping fluids with and without nicotine and vaping cannabis or CBD. In cultured human airway epithelial cells, both e-cigarette aerosol and CS extract induced IL-8/CXCL8 (neutrophil chemoattractant) release [28]. They argue such a move would hurt small vape business owners and people trying to quit smoking. Many governments impose restrictions on smoking tobacco, especially in public areas. The primary justification has been the negative health effects of second-hand smoke.[124] Laws vary by country and locality. Nearly all countries have laws restricting places where people can smoke in public, and over 40 countries have comprehensive smoke-free laws that prohibit smoking in virtually all public venues. During World War I and World War II, cigarettes were rationed to soldiers.
Their actions should come as no surprise as e-cigarette manufacturers fail to provide consumers with guidance or take responsibility for appropriate disposal methods. In a separate study conducted by Truth Initiative in 2019, almost half (46.9%) of e-cigarette device owners said that the e-cigarette device they used currently did not provide any disposal information, such as where to send used batteries or empty pods. Additionally, when e-cigarette device owners were asked about e-cigarette waste disposal, the majority (73.7%) believed that it was difficult to find e-cigarette drop off sites. Principal investigator Wendy Max, PhD, director of the Institute for Health & Aging, noted that from 2013 to 2018, e-cigarette use among high school students soared from 4.5% to 20.8%. The Australian Government’s new Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) legislation commences from April 2024 and incorporates new controls governing the advertising and promotion of e‑cigarettes (Department of Health and Aged Care 2024). Consequently, stricter regulation and a higher quality control in the e-liquid industry are required. The mislabelling of nicotine content in e-liquids has been previously addressed [8, 34]. Of note, several studies have detected nicotine in those e-liquids labelled as nicotine-free [5, 35, 36]. Among the 17 samples tested in this latter study 14 were identified to be counterfeit or suspected counterfeit. A third study detected nicotine in 7 of 10 nicotine-free refills, although the concentrations were lower than those identified in the previous analyses (0.1–15 µg/mL) [5].

All this evidence would suggest that e-cigarettes are potentially less harmful than conventional cigarettes (Fig. 2) [11, 14, 22, 24, 27,28,29]. Importantly, however, most of these studies have investigated only short-term effects [10, 14, 15, 22, 27,28,29, 31, 32], and the long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption on human health are still unclear and require further study. Vapes come in colorful, fun, and unique product designs, along with many flavors, all of which come together as part of the attraction for youth who believe that these products are not addictive and are safe to use. Many users believe vaping will reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

These types of studies, they say, promise to identify early indicators of—and ultimately treatments for—vaping-related disease. While some tout e-cigarettes as a solution to quitting conventional smoking, the truth about relative risks is complicated, says Crotty Alexander, who is a researcher in addition to providing patient care and teaching.

Upon the selection of the educational track, students may already have normative perceptions of smoking in vocational schools, such as understanding of smoking as an integral and expected practice in these schools and professions [8]. These perceptions may increase S-SM and other nicotine product use, also among students with better academic performance. Student network characteristics and their associations with smoking vary between schools [28].
Prior to that, it was the Wild West, where a variety of companies started making and selling products with their own personal spin. Among boys, the same was observed for S-EC, whereas a higher proportion of students with positive attitudes towards snus use in one’s age group increased S-SN. Interestingly, a higher proportion of students planning for general upper secondary education had lowered S-EC and S-SN in the univariate analyses but increased S-SM and S-SN in the multivariate models. This may reflect, for instance, more complex interactions between individual- and school-level factors influencing susceptibility among boys. In general, students with positive attitude towards product use in one’s age group and current use of some other tobacco or nicotine product had consistently higher susceptibility regardless of product type.

E-cigarette aerosol is not harmless; it can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals. While e-cigarettes typically have fewer chemicals than regular cigarettes, researchers found e-cigarettes present their own unique health risks and can increase the odds of chronic cough, phlegm, bronchitis, and asthma. Some cigarette smokers have replaced traditional smoking with electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or vaping, thinking it is not as dangerous. There are significant negative health effects from smoking cigarettes such as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, birth defects, and other health problems relating to nearly every organ of the body.
However, no rigorous scientific studies have shown that they are safe for use. Some people who smoke choose to try e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking. But switching to e-cigarettes still exposes users to potentially serious ongoing health risks. It’s important to stop using all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, as soon as possible both to reduce health risks and to avoid staying addicted to nicotine.
To inform schools of intervention needs, the susceptibility measure could be utilized in school surveys and relevant student services as a screening tool. Simultaneously, it would support the evaluation of existing policies and programmes and monitoring of potential counter-effects. For example, an earlier study observed that school-based programmes and policies had resulted in higher susceptibility risk at some intervention schools [37]. Effective and non-counter-productive interventions are especially important for products where susceptibility is at a high level, like e-cigarettes. Interventions to reduce susceptibility therefore need to address product regulation and marketing as well as social influence, norms, and perceptions.
Some people believe that e-cigarettes can help them quit smoking tobacco. However, nicotine patches and many other FDA-approved quit aids are available now to help people quit smoking. E-cigarettes are not currently approved by the FDA as aids to help stop smoking.
Any smoking is harmful and you will only get the full benefits of vaping if you stop smoking completely. Some people manage to make a full switch very quickly, while for others it can take a bit longer. The NFHS Learning Center offers a 3-level national coaching credential that helps you gain knowledge you can use to provide a fun, educational, and a safer environment for your students.
Encourage your teen to look into the warnings and media stories related to vaping, or reach out to her primary care provider with questions. BackgroundThe clinical trial was conducted by Truth Initiative with oversight from Advarra Institutional Review Board. All participants received incentivized text message assessments regarding e-cigarette use and abstinence at 14 days post-randomization and monthly thereafter through 6 months. All participants were compensated $5 via digital card per response (7 assessments total, maximum $35).
Other important components in the aerosols include silicate particles from the fiberglass wicks or silicone [89,90,91]. Many of these products are known to cause abnormalities in respiratory function and respiratory diseases [89,90,91], but more in-depth studies are required. Interestingly, the battery output voltage also seems to have an impact on the cytotoxicity of the aerosol vapours, with e-liquids from a higher battery output voltage showing more toxicity to A549 cells [30]. The lethal dose of nicotine for an adult is estimated at 30–60 mg [52].
The data shows that in 2021, 69.2 percent of e-cigarette cartridges either sold or given away contained menthol-flavored e-liquids, and the rest were tobacco-flavored. E-cigarette companies also spent $90.6 million more advertising and promoting their products in 2021 than in 2020. Flavored e-cigarettes are very popular, especially among young people.
Vape pens offer slightly more customisation than cigalikes, as you can use your choice of e-liquid (flavour and strength). If you feel like you're going to give in to your tobacco craving, tell yourself that you must first wait 10 more minutes. These simple tricks may be enough to move you past your tobacco craving. When you feel an urge to use tobacco, keep in mind that even though the urge may be strong, it will likely pass within 5 to 10 minutes whether or not you smoke a cigarette or take a dip of chewing tobacco.
While FDA has made progress in reviewing marketing applications for flavored e-cigarettes, it has repeatedly missed deadlines to complete its review of major products and failed to clear the market of these illegal flavored products. Here you will find the facts on vaping, based on scientific evidence and research, plus advice on how to use vapes (sometimes called e-cigarettes or e-cigs) as a tool to quit smoking. Battery-powered vape devices create an aerosol that looks like water vapor but contains nicotine, flavoring, and more than 30 other chemicals. The aerosol is inhaled into the lungs where the nicotine and chemicals cross over into the bloodstream. The earliest vape devices looked like cigarettes. With Americans puffing less each year, the cigarette industry sees ESDs and other smokeless products as financial saviors. E-cigarette sales tripled between 2012 and 2013 rising from $500 million to over $1.5 billion and are expected to soon exceed the sales of traditional cigarettes, motivating giant tobacco and other non-cigarette companies to market this product.
Altria Group chief executive William Gifford told analysts during a second-quarter conference call that makers of unregulated e-cigarettes are responding to consumers’ switching to nicotine pouches. According to the latest Nielsen convenience store report released Wednesday, Zyn sales have jumped 74.6% year-over-year with total annual sales now in the $2 billion range. Tobacco industry executives and analysts are sounding alarms about a surge of unregulated nicotine pouches entering the U.S. that is chipping away at regulated products.
They then compiled these rates into one score to determine the 'healthiest' and 'unhealthiest' states for kids. Overall, recent figures from JAMA suggest more than 2million kids under 18 vape regularly, along with 17million adults. Combined with smoking, it may accelerate these effects, leading to osteoporosis. Nicotine causes blood vessels to tighten, which restricts the flow of blood. Smoking also raises blood pressure, weakens blood vessel walls, and increases your risk of blood clots. It can also damage the DNA in sperm, making it difficult to conceive and increasing the risk of miscarriage and certain birth defects.
However, the state's largely rural landscape and small population could be partly to blame for its high youth vaping rate. About 80 percent of Wyoming's residents live in rural areas, as much of the land area is used for farming and national parks. Researchers combed through state-by-state data from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, an advocacy group aimed at stopping youth smoking. Since 2020, emergency department visits in Virginia by patients who said they vape jumped significantly, while visits by those who use traditional tobacco declined, according to stats from Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.
As vaping is still relatively new, we can’t be sure there aren’t any long-term effects to people who breathe in someone else’s vapour. E-cigarettes should only be used to help you stop smoking, or to stop you going back to tobacco. After using my vape (e-cigarette) for over a year now, my body feels so much better than when I was smoking cigarettes.
A priority of the New York State Tobacco Control Program is to prevent the initiation of tobacco use, including combustible tobacco and electronic cigarettes, by youth and young adults. The Program funds Reality Check, the youth engagement component for New York State teens, ages 13-18, to increase support for New York State's tobacco-free and vape-free norms through youth action and community engagement. Evidence-based, policy-driven, and cost-effective approaches are implemented to decrease youth tobacco use, protect youth from exposure to tobacco marketing and imagery, and eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke. Visit Reality Check for more information and to find your local Reality Check group. According to a 2019 CDC industry update, one out of every 10 high school students reported using tobacco products, due in part to easy access through mail deliveries and online sellers.
This guidance is intended to support healthcare providers in their understanding and tracking of -cigarette and vaping product use. 20% (5 million) of all youth use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in just two years. Additional data, rates and trends can be found in the American Lung Association’s Tobacco Trends Brief.
Parental smoking, positive attitude towards e-cigarette use in one’s age group, current smoking, and snus use increased S-EC, whereas liking school lowered it. At school level, both among girls and boys, a higher proportion of students liking school and being never-users lowered S-EC, whereas a higher proportion of students with positive attitudes towards e-cigarette use increased it. Among girls, a higher proportion of girls in the school, students with a high parental education and planning for GUSS lowered S-EC, but a higher proportion of students with parental smoking increased it.

The decision to pursue a smoking cessation objective, even in such a controlled form, should be made only after considering national circumstances, along with the risk of uptake and after exhausting other proven cessation strategies. Both smoking and vaping involve heating a substance and inhaling the resulting fumes. With vaping, a device (typically a vape pen or a mod — an enhanced vape pen — that may look like a flash drive) heats up a liquid (called vape juice or e-liquid) until it turns into a vapor that you inhale. Electronic smoking devices or e-cigarettes are battery operated devices used to inhale a vaporized liquid solution that frequently contain nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. Because the liquid solution is converted into an aerosol vapor, e-cigarette use is often referred to as "vaping," rather than smoking. E-cigarettes are devices that heat a liquid, called e-liquid, into an aerosol that the user can inhale.

Fortunately, there has been a substantial drop in cases since they peaked in August and September of 2020. What’s more, researchers have also identified vitamin E acetate, a chemical added to some THC-containing vaping products, as the main—but possibly not the only—cause of the illness. The outbreak of EVALI cases emerged against a backdrop of an ongoing vaping epidemic among youth.
A growing body of research indicates that truth campaigns to prevent young people from vaping are poised to move in the same direction as the organization’s successful smoking prevention campaigns. See " Quitting Tobacco " for more information on quitting tobacco products. Let's say you love the feel and flavor you get from puffing on a vape — but you can't quite bring yourself to trust that it's safe. It uses a puff of pressurized, flavored air to simulate the "throat hit" of a vape, with no heating element whatsoever.
However, to date, no e-cigarette product has been approved by the FDA for quitting smoking. Although e-cigarettes have been sold in the U.S. for nearly 20 years, use patterns have shifted dramatically. As newer iterations brought higher levels of nicotine in an increasing array of flavors and product designs, youth use skyrocketed.
Vape products are taxed at the sales tax rate rather than the tobacco or cigarette tax rate. While vape products are not covered by the Smoke-free Air Act, each business can prohibit the use of vape devices indoors, but this is not required by state law. Iowa law places several restrictions on youth access to e-cigarettes, including but not limited to, prohibiting the sale, distribution, possession, purchase and use of vapor products to anyone under the age of 21. There are health and safety concerns related to the use of vapor products.
With so many adults kicking the cigarette smoking habit, Altria was looking for ways to sustain its financial stability. Outside of addiction, nicotine can also have other long-term and permanent effects on developing brains. Because vaping has only recently gained popularity, we don’t yet have the data to tell us all its health effects. E-cigarettes are also called e-cigs, vape pens, vapes, mods, and other terms.
The ACS encourages adolescent users who find it difficult to quit to ask for help from health care professionals. Parents should learn all they can about e-cigarette use and be prepared to help their children get the assistance they need. In 2019, more than one in six (15.2%) New York City high school students reported using e-cigarettes.
Median odds ratio (MOR), which shows the difference between two respondents with identical student-level characteristics from two randomly chosen different schools, was calculated to express between-school variance on the odds ratio scale [36]. The analysis was not pre-registered, and the results should be considered exploratory. Scholastic Real Cost of VapingThe FDA collaborated with the Scholastic Corporation to develop lessons, activities and resources for teachers to increase awareness about the health consequences of youth e-cigarette use. Stanford Medicine is an integrated academic health system comprising the Stanford School of Medicine and adult and pediatric health care delivery systems. Together, they harness the full potential of biomedicine through collaborative research, education and clinical care for patients. This study was the first to use endothelial cells derived from iPS cells to directly investigate the effect of e-liquids with and without nicotine on their viability and function.
In King County, youth e-cigarette use is now higher than the use of conventional cigarettes. The ACS does not recommend the use of e-cigarettes as a cessation method. No e-cigarette has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a safe and effective cessation product. Some people use vaping to curb their appetite, but there’s no proof that vaping helps with weight loss.
The success of all these enterprises hinges on the claim that e-cigarettes are healthier than traditional cigarettes. Companies like to paint a black-and-white picture of a new era of safe smoking. "Cigarettes, you've met your match," NJOY proudly proclaims in its Super Bowl ads. E-cigarettes and vaping are part of a trend going back at least nine years in the U.S. First publicized as a safer alternative to smoking tobacco, vaping caught on because it didn’t contain the carcinogens or tars found in most smoking tobacco products. Also, vaping was supposed to eliminate the dangers of secondhand smoke to those nearby.
What may be the most important message of all is that e-cigarettes and vaping come with many health unknowns, Dr. O’Connor adds. "You see plumes of what looks like steam coming out of people’s mouths on the street when they are vaping, and I think they assume it’s mostly safe, mostly water. But these liquids used in vaping are filled with all kinds of stuff [like nicotine, marijuana, flavoring agents, chemicals], and we don’t always know what else is in there," he says. When potentially risky behaviors experience an uptick in popularity, health researchers are never far behind—gathering data.
In contrast, other studies found acute microvascular endothelial dysfunction, increased oxidative stress and arterial stiffness in smokers after exposure to e-cigarettes with nicotine, but not after e-cigarettes without nicotine (reviewed in [20]). In women smokers, a study found a significant difference in stiffness after smoking just one tobacco cigarette, but not after use of e-cigarettes (reviewed in [20]). However, research updates on, and analysis of, the potential health benefits/risks of e-cigarettes are outside the scope of TobaccoTactics. These devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as pictured below, with several different names. Some e-cigarettes look like regular cigarettes, but many resemble pens or USB flash drives, and are electronic cigarettes allowed on carnival cruises not recognized as tobacco products. Larger e-cigarettes such as tank systems, or "mods," do not resemble other tobacco products.
It's free of heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, microbes, and fungal toxins. It contains nothing but hemp extract and terpenes (the molecules that give cannabis its piney, citrusy flavors). See your general practitioner, youth health service, or other health services to help quit vaping. All e-cigarettes & e-liquids (with and without nicotine) and e-cigarette accessories can now only be supplied by a pharmacist, medical practitioner, or nurse practitioner. If at any point you feel at risk of going back to smoking, increase your nicotine strength or vaping frequency until the feelings go away. Only reduce your vaping frequency or nicotine strength when you feel you will not go back to smoking and do not have to puff more to compensate. Your local Stop Smoking Service can give more advice on quitting vaping if you need it. So far, no vaping products have been licensed as stop smoking medicines in the UK, so they are not available on prescription from the NHS or from a GP.
The increasing number of adolescent users and reported deaths in the United States prompted the government to ban the sale of flavoured e-cigarettes in 2020. The difference in opinion worldwide may be due to different restrictions imposed. For example, while no more than 20 ng/mL of nicotine is allowed in the EU, e-liquids with 59 mg/dL are currently available in the United States. Nevertheless, despite the national restrictions, users can easily access foreign or even counterfeit products online. Is there sufficient toxicological data on all the components employed in e-liquids?

The last reviewed date indicates when the evidence for this resource last underwent a comprehensive review. Reviewed by Kenneth Uy, a health coach and tobacco treatment specialist at Henry Ford Health. Patrick O’Connor, MD, Yale Medicine’s chief of general internal medicine, who has dedicated his career to researching opioid and alcohol drug abuse, points to similarities between epidemic cigarette use in the 1940s and 50s, and e-cigarette use now.
Another potential risk posed by vaping indoors is allergic reactions, especially among children. According to research, roughly 8% of kids in the United States have food allergies. Nuts (a common food allergy) are sometimes used to make added flavors in vaping fluids.
This national credential was developed for individuals who are currently coaching or aspire to coach at the interscholastic level. What we do know is that many cartridges contain nicotine, the dangerously addictive chemical found in normal cigarettes. Every provider at Loma Linda University Health can tell you how important it is to keep your lungs healthy. Our lung specialists, like Dr. Laren Tan, see patients every day who suffer from debilitating lung issues caused by smoking. Since the end of 2019, it is illegal to sell vaping products to people younger than 21 years.
An assessment from the agency, issued in 2008, references only a couple of studies that cover inhalation exposures—all with laboratory animals rather than people. The minimum age to purchase e-cigarettes and other tobacco products has also been raised to 21. A bill was also introduced in 2022 to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products and vapes from 19 to 21, but it was vetoed by Governor Mike Dunleavy.
In some instances, because of its appearance and the vapours it emits, an e-cigarette may be confused with a regular cigarette. Other types of e-cigarettes, however, are similar to a cigar, a smoking pipe, or a ballpoint pen in appearance. This story has been updated to correct that two of the four menthol e-cigarettes from Njoy are disposable products.
E-cigarettes are popular among teens and young adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2019, nearly 28 percent of high-school students and 11 percent of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. About 8 percent of young adults ages 18 to 24 reported using e-cigarettes in 2018. In 2019, nearly 28% of high-school students and 11% of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that generate an inhalable aerosol that usually contains nicotine. Minnesota teens are using e-cigarettes and vapes at alarming rates, exposing themselves to the harms of nicotine and risking addiction.
Due to what has been called an ‘epidemic’ of youth use of these products, FDA has prioritized prevention efforts. The agency has taken a multitude of actions to keep ENDS out of the hands of youth, from policy making to enforcement to education. While e-cigarettes can generally be a lower-risk alternative for adults who smoke cigarettes, the use of e-cigarettes is not risk-free. These products deliver harmful chemicals and contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Moreover, given the harmful chemicals found in e-cigarettes, further high-quality research on both short- and long-term health outcomes is needed. The longer ENDS and other e-cigarettes are on the market, the more information we know about their impacts on health.
To vape is to inhale vapor created from a liquid heated up inside a device. The devices have many names—vape pens, pod mods, tanks, electronic nicotine delivery devices (ENDS), e-hookahs and e-cigarettes. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine and their repeated use can lead to nicotine addiction or increase the user's risk of addiction. Some e-cigarette brands contain nicotine salts to mask the harshness of nicotine and make it more palatable. As of 2018, all tobacco products must bear the required nicotine addictiveness warning statement on product packages and advertisements in order to warn consumers about the presence of and addictive nature of nicotine.
However, within the adult demographic, 12.7 percent of 18- to 24-year-old adults and 21.3 percent of males, ages 18-24, are "current users" of e-cigarettes. The e-cigarette device (Vype ePod1.0, Nicoventures Trading Ltd., Blackburn, UK) consists of a metallic outer device case, a printed circuit board to control the device, a lithium-ion rechargeable battery (350 mAh) and an e-cigarette cartridge (Fig. 1). The voltage ranges from 2.2 to 3.1 V and is not adjustable by the user. The device has dimensions (h × w × d) of 104.2 × 19.1 × 10.5 mm and a power output of 6.5 ± 0.5 W. The cartridges or pods consist of a plastic case holding the ceramic wick material and a flat metal heating element (NiCr, 0.8 –1.4-Ω resistance). Each pod is pre-filled with Vype e-liquid (1.9 mL) and is magnetically attached to the device.
However, 87% of people who reported using e‑cigarettes with nicotine had obtained them without prescriptions. "This relatively small study showed that e-cigarettes have the potential to decrease heart muscle blood supply, not just under the stress of exercise like traditional cigarettes but even at rest," he says. The authors of a 2019 review point out that e-liquid aerosols contain particulates, oxidizing agents, aldehydes, and nicotine. When inhaled, these aerosols most likely affect the heart and circulatory system. Of note, another study indicated that although RANTES/CCL5 and CCR1 mRNA were upregulated in flavour/nicotine-containing e-cigarette users, vaping flavour and nicotine-less e-cigarettes did not significantly dysregulate cytokine and inflammasome activation [43].
Aug. 9, 2023, News Staff — New CDC data suggest that e-cigarette use is becoming more popular among young adults, even as their use of tobacco decreases. Freebase nicotine is nicotine that has been dissolved in a liquid mixture, typically propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, and other chemicals such as flavouring ingredients. E-cigarettes contain nicotine and lithium batteries, making them hazardous waste.
Any product that does not submit an application by this deadline must be removed from the marketplace, which if properly enforced, could lead a significantly smaller marketplace. The main component of e-cigarettes is the e-liquid contained in cartridges or tanks. To create an e-liquid, nicotine is extracted from tobacco and mixed with a base (usually propylene glycol), and may also include flavorings, colorings and other chemicals (such as formaldehyde and acrolein, which can cause irreversible lung damage). The American Lung Association is very concerned that we are at risk of losing another generation to tobacco-caused diseases as the result of e-cigarettes.
