There is no single test for EVALI; it’s what is known as a "diagnosis of exclusion," which means that a doctor will conduct tests to rule out other potential diseases and conditions. The primary risk factor for EVALI is current or previous use of a vaping device. They can look like cigarettes, cigars, pipes, pens, USB flash drives, or may be in other forms. We fund research that explores how risk factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, and lack of physical activity can affect the development of cancer. For instance, 68 people died in an outbreak of vaping-related illness (EVALI) in 2019 and 2020. Whichever vape you choose, make sure you use it daily to help you make the switch from cigarettes. A vape bar, pod device or vape pen are good choices, as they are discreet, make small clouds and can give high amounts of nicotine. You can use patches with a vape if you need to, as these give ongoing support by releasing nicotine slowly. Some people find vaping helps them because the hand-to-mouth action is like smoking, plus you get similar sensations, like throat hit (the "kick" in the back of your throat when you inhale).
Without immediate measures to stop epidemic use of these products, the long-term adverse health effects will increase. Despite their popularity, little is known about their health effects. Some suggest that e-cigarettes likely confer lower risk compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, because they do not expose users to toxicants produced through combustion. Proponents of e-cigarette use also tout the potential benefits of e-cigarettes as devices that could help combustible tobacco cigarette smokers to quit and thereby reduce tobacco-related health risks. Others are concerned about the exposure to potentially toxic substances contained in e-cigarette emissions, especially in individuals who have never used tobacco products such as youth and young adults.
Many e-cigarettes sold in the U.S. contain far more nicotine than e-cigarettes sold elsewhere, which increases the risk of addiction and harm to the developing brains of youth and young adults. Marketing tactics targeting young people have contributed to the rapid increase in use. The long-term risks of exclusive use of e-cigarettes are not fully known but evidence is accumulating that e-cigarette use has negative effects on the cardiovascular system and lungs.
Youth vaping has declined from all-time highs in recent years, with about 10% of high schoolers reporting e-cigarette use last year. Vaping is not completely risk-free, but it poses a small fraction of the risk of smoking cigarettes. The aerosols generated by ENDS typically raise the concentration of particulate matter in indoor environments and contain nicotine and other potentially toxic substances. ENDS emissions therefore pose potential risks to both users and non-users. Accidental exposure of children to ENDS e-liquids pose serious risks as devices may leak or children may swallow the poisonous e-liquid.
They also contain toxins that can damage your lungs and overall health. One of the reasons why the e-cigarette epidemic among young people is so troubling is that e-cigarette use seems to lead to the use of traditional cigarettes. This makes them a better choice for people who already smoke or use other tobacco products. Vaping may have some benefits for smokers who switch to it as a complete substitute for using other tobacco products. E-cigarette manufacturers are using marketing tactics used by the tobacco industry to lure kids to conventional cigarettes.

One of the first studies in humans involved the analysis of 9 volunteers that consumed e-cigarettes, with or without nicotine, in a ventilated room for 2 h [8]. Pollutants in indoor air, exhaled nitric oxide (NO) and urinary metabolite profiles were analysed. The results of this acute experiment revealed that e-cigarettes are not emission-free, and ultrafine particles formed from propylene glycol (PG) could be detected in the lungs. In line with these observations, dysregulation of lung homeostasis has been documented in non-smokers subjected to acute inhalation of e-cigarette aerosols [10]. Globally, there is an ongoing debate about whether e-cigarettes are a threat or an opportunity to public health.

There's a lot that's still unknown about the harms of secondhand vaping, but research suggests that bystanders who breathe in the aerosol might be exposed to toxins. It's unclear how exposure to these toxins might impact health, but it's possible that repeated exposure could impact lung function in the long term.

When the human body breaks down a foreign substance, one can typically find chemical by-products in hair or urine that provide clues about how it has interacted with cells. This is true for nicotine, but in the case of propylene glycol, no one has established what the relevant by-product is or how to best detect it. Boston, MA – Diacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s. E-cigarettes can contain other harmful substances, including cancer-causing chemicals; chemicals linked to serious lung disease; and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead. Young people who use e-cigarettes may be more likely to smoke traditional cigarettes in the future. Vapor products produce aerosol by heating a liquid solution, which is inhaled as an aerosol. The process is referred to as "vaping." Vapor products often contain nicotine.
Meanwhile, some influential conservatives are calling for the Trump administration to hold back on its plans to ban flavored tobacco. They argue such a move would hurt small vape business owners and people trying to quit smoking. Many governments impose restrictions on smoking tobacco, especially in public areas. The primary justification has been the negative health effects of second-hand smoke.[124] Laws vary by country and locality. Nearly all countries have laws restricting places where people can smoke in public, and over 40 countries have comprehensive smoke-free laws that prohibit smoking in virtually all public venues. During World War I and World War II, cigarettes were rationed to soldiers.

By Robyn Correll, MPHCorrell holds a master of public health degree and has over a decade of experience working in the prevention of infectious diseases. Researchers spent decades studying the health consequences of secondhand smoke. It might be a while before we have a clear picture of how secondhand vaping can impact a person’s long-term health, especially for young children.
Collectively, these devices are known as electronic nicotine delivery systems. E-cigarette use is often referred to as "vaping" and the aerosol created from their use referred to as "vapor." E-cigarettes come in many colors, shapes, and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, highlighters, or toys. The liquid in e-cigarettes is sometimes called e-juice, e-liquid, vape juice, or vape liquid.
According to the CDC, 15% of EVALI patients were less than 18 years old. In addition, e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vapor may contain the chemicals or substances listed below. E-cigarettes are known by many different names, and sometimes people find it hard to understand what is really known about these devices.
The length of time spent vaping can be much longer than smoking a standard cigarette. While most cigarettes are smoked within two to five minutes, e-cigarettes can last up to 20 minutes, delivering more nicotine and damaging chemicals to the lungs. In addition, some vaping mixtures can contain 20 times the nicotine that a single cigarette contains. This study builds on the findings of an earlier randomized clinical trial of This is Quitting conducted among roughly 2,600 young adults ages 18 to 24.

In addition to the battery component, an e-cigarette comprises an atomizer and a cartridge containing either a nicotine or a non-nicotine liquid solution. When the device is operated, the battery heats the liquid in the cartridge, and the atomizer vaporizes the liquid, emitting it as a mist that the user inhales. Hence, e-cigarette use is commonly described as vaping, a term also used in reference to the use of similar devices, including vape pens and e-hookas. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) go by many names, including but not limited to electronic nicotine delivery systems, vapes, vape pens, e-cigars, and hookah pens.
E-cigarettes produce an aerosolized liquid (vapor) that usually contains nicotine and other chemicals inhaled by the user. Months after the release of that advisory, Yale researchers found that byproducts, called acetals, form when flavoring agents mix with solvents in the liquid. It is not yet known if this has negative effects on the body, but Sven-Eric Jordt, PhD, one of the study’s authors, says he hopes that the FDA will begin to study the short- and long-term effects of inhaled acetals. Under the PACT Act, delivery sales of electronic nicotine delivery systems must also comply with state, local or tribal laws involving excise taxes on these devices.
No amount of nicotine is safe for youth as there may be long-term, damaging effects on learning, memory, attention, behavior problems, and future addiction. Electronic cigarettes or vapes (referred to collectively as ‘e‑cigarettes’) are personal vaping devices where users inhale aerosol rather than smoke. E-cigarettes have been allowed to stay on the market for years without undergoing a full review of their public health impact, sparking a sustained and ongoing crisis of youth use. As of November 2023, the FDA has not completed reviewing all applications from e-cigarette makers to market their products, leaving many e-cigarettes on the market while waiting for a decision. To date, the FDA has denied permission to market flavored and menthol e-cigarette products such as Vuse Solo, Vuse Vibe, Vuse Ciro, and Vuse Alto. The FDA has denied permission to market many non-tobacco and non-menthol flavored e-cigarette products, however, many of those denials are currently under judicial or supervisory review. In recent years, the FDA has increased enforcement efforts around e-cigarette manufacturers and retailers for continuing to sell youth-appealing e-cigarettes. These actions include issuing warning letters, fines, injunctions, and joint operations with other federal officials to seize imports of unauthorized e-cigarette products.
